EVs are not intrinsically better than any other car. There are no regulations or policies that say that they have to be built to any particular standard. This means that you can buy an EV that take more energy to drive from than a small, efficient hybrid. All that energy is created somewhere else, and that creates more pollution, but it’s not ‘in your face’.
“coal-fired plants in the USA accounted for about 22% of electricity” while releasing twice the amount of carbon that Natural Gas does. Coal also releases background radiation that exceeds the amount released by Nuke power plants.
My car is PHEV (plug in hybrid) that is one of the most efficient cars on the road, more efficient than the current Teslas. 30 miles on battery at freeway speeds. 600 miles on 10 gallons of gas. But I drive 2000 miles a month. Does that negate the positives of my clean car? Sort of, but the monthly trips are required in order to support invalid family members, so it’s not frivolous waste.
