I teach first grade and have several students like Calvin. If any of them could write as well as he appears to in several episodes (?–I can’t think of the right term), I’d give them a pass on the math and channel their energies into writing. However, most kids don’t have a clue about punctuation and other conventions that make their writing more readable until they’re in third grade.
I have 21 students in my first grade class and at least three of them must be clones of Calvin–and not “good Calvin” either! Another 7 or 8 take turns being Calvin, and thankfully, it’s usually on different days. Perhaps reading this every day will give me some insights on where their minds have gone temporarily and how to get them back. But I’m not going to bet on it!
