Does anyone remember what year this set of strips ran in? Tried a quick googling and didn’t find it.

Isn’t the implication that he didn’t really know her past? I can’t tell.

Yeah, I felt like she became too much of a goody-goody and lost some of what made her interesting.

Wow, does this argument seem even worse in hindsight, or what?

I’ve met lots of guys who didn’t know/accept they were gay earlier in their lives, and they eventually overcame their denial. It’s a real phenomena.

Andy Lippincott. He was introduced in the 1970s as a law school classmate of Joanie Caucus. She was attracted to him, they became friends and seemed to be moving towards romance, and he then revealed he was gay. He appeared off-and-on after that, but this strip is probably from his battle with AIDS in 1989-90. He may be the only fictional character with a panel on the AIDS quilt. I remember reading these strips when I was a kid, and it was one of the few sympathetic depictions of homosexuality and people suffering from AIDS that I saw at the time (times have changed).
