Yes, should have pointed out that the toon is a take on the scene from 2001 and that no parents in bed or crying Star Child were in the original. Just a serene embryonic ‘planet’ dawning over Earth while Strauss’ ‘Thus Spake Zarathustra’ plays. Good times!
As droosan indicated, this is the famous last scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Dave (“Open the pod bay doors, HAL”) has passed through the black slab portal left by the aliens long ago and has now been reborn as the ‘Star Child’ floating over Earth with epic music playing again… good times! My oldest brother took me to see it in the original Cinemascope back in 1968. My 11 year old mind was blown but YMMV.
Annie became a Schrödinger child in the Twilight Zone back before they changed the water. There should be a sticky with this strip so these same questions don’t get asked over and over.
Ah cha… I was confused because Ms. Burritt had a link in her original post which must be a privilege reserved for Creators. Anyway, the Colin Nissan piece at McSweeny’s, “It’s decorative gourd season, Motherf#$&%*s” is well worth the read. So popular they repost it every year.
My day, as well!
