There’s some thought (from the 80’s, if I recall correctly) that Goya may have been dealing with lead poisoning and that caused his downward spirals. He regularly tasted his paint to make sure it was the right color/consistency — it was lead-based paint. As the lead built up in his system, it would cause sever depression, hallucinations, etc. Then he’d go to an asylum, detox, then get out and paint “nice” stuff. Once it built up again, he’d spiral down again. That’s the theory, anyway.
