To my mind, the biggest difference with nitrogen is the convenience it negates by eliminating the possibility of pumping up your own tires in your own garage.

Not true. I am American raised and (in my mind ill-) trained with imperial measurements. I have self trained to use metrics solely because I find them simpler and superior.
That is only for personal use. I concur, that when it comes to communication with the vast majority of others in this country, the only useful measurements are imperial.
