One of my favorite arcs is the baby raccoon. Calvin finds an injured/sick baby raccoon and brings it home. Mom is honest and says she doesn’t know how to help it, but she helps Calvin fix up a bed in a box for it and get it settled in the garage. The next morning Calvin runs out to the garage, only to find the raccoon has died. Dad is there and tells Calvin that it is sad that baby animal died, but at least it died warm and safe. Both parents are great in this story.

ours cited people for leaving their trash cans out after 5 pm on trash pickup day – a little tricky to comply when you don’t leave work til 5. But when we had problems with vandalism in the tiny playground, the solution was to remove the swings and block the side rather than, I don’t know, talk to the police? Use some of the trash can fine money to hire security? Nope.

It seems like every new development gets an HOA slapped on. They are generally useless; collecting dues, imposing stupid rules and then fining you for breaking the rules; ignoring actual problems in the neighborhood in favor of measuring grass height and checking the exact shade of beige the mailbox is painted.

Every Peanuts I see that has characters with their hands in their pockets reminds me of one where Linus shows Charlie Brown a picture of a man he drew. CB says “Very nice…I see you’ve drawn him with his hands in his pockets. That means you yourself have deep feelings of insecurity”. And Linus shoots back, “No, it’s because I myself can’t draw hands”. I always wonder if that was one of Schulz’s weak areas.

I think this is the golden era of Peanuts, before it was so commercialized and the kids became cynical philosophers. During these years the kids were just kids, mimicking the adult world for humor.

    I remember saying ‘color-crayons’!

I remember doing that with one of my friends. Either she didn’t have skates or didn’t want to go home to get them, but we each wore one. Better than nothing!

Every time I see a Peanuts character with his hands in his pockets, I think of a classic Charlie Brown/Linus strip. Linus shows Charlie Brown a picture he’s drawn:CB: Nice picture! I see you’ve drawn this man with his hands in his pockets. That’s because you, yourself, have deep feelings of insecurityLinus: No, it’s because I, myself, can’t draw hands!

Tinker Toys were so much cooler than Lincoln Logs!

I miss the days when the humor in Peanuts came from very commonplace, adult comments like ‘black keys still painted on, I see’ – the kids having everyday adult conversations in the midst of their play.
