Several years ago the San Jose Mercury News ran an article expressing surprise that today’s students, despite being completely comfortable with modern computing devices, were showing no interest in computer engineering or computer science. The only thing about the article that surprised me was that the author was surprised. American parents continue to raise their kids to be lawyers and MBAs, not engineers. Who wants their kid to be a “nerd”?
Which is why we’re getting totally pwned by the Russians and Chinese.

I love the way Pluggers captures solid, hard working America, but this one misses the mark. Yes, I rolled my eyes at my parent’s Liberace and Lawrence Welk. I can still sing the entire “Good Night, Sleep Tight” song from memory, and can instantly determine someone else’s age by whether they remember it, too.But my kids listen to The Beatles, CCR, Santana, Led Zeppelin, and Elvis as much ore more than I did. And for sure, they’d have been more likely to be at Woodstock than I ever would.
