The protagonist in this one act comedy is displaying dualistic persona in the statement of: denial of laudable heroics in the former, and self aggrandizement in the latter. This contradictory duality is meant to suggest humor to the reader in the ironic nature of such a statement.
The silence and neutral expression of the supporting character (in the suggested form of a news reporter), possibly an antagonist in the sense that their role is derivative to any heroics at all, enforces the notion the protagonist’s self-contrary statement.
One might soften criticism of the protagonist as, in any case, a good deed was done, and the apparently rescued infant appears with an expression of pleasure, if not admiration.
This peep hole has a larger diameter than a conventional peep hole. That’s the funny part.
