It is all how chivalry is done. My husband opens doors for me not because he wants to show me where to go or because he thinks I can’t but because he wants to show me little ways that he loves me. He pulls out chairs for me and scoots me in for the same reason. He will ask me what I think I want to eat at dinner and then order for me showing he LISTENED to me and REMEMBERS how I like things. We both constantly do little things for each other to show how much we think about the other and care about them. I feel really special when he does these things for me.
And the coolest part is since I have a degenerative disease and struggle sometimes opening things or cutting things – I never feel like he feels sorry for me or thinks I cannot do something – instead I feel like when he offers to cut up my meat or open my soda it is because he cares and I don’t feel disabled but feel special and loved. By the way I am only 40. I teach my son to do these things too and he is 17 years old. I think showing respect for women is so important when I hear lyrics degrading them.
More than that though in a world where people seem to judge how much someone cares by how big or expensive something is – I think it is so nice to show how much you care on a regular basis with little things – often things that do not cost anything but a little time and compassion.
