Big “yes” on that, ‘Green. I still remember when my wife sent me to the store some years ago for a bottle of “balsamic”. Standing in the aisle, confronted by at least three dozen “balsamic” products, I called her for clarification… We both laughed about it for some years. Later, in my retirement job, in retail plumbing & electrical for Ace, I saw the other side. At least daily, some woman would come in with a cryptic note from spouse to get something or other, but lacking even basic details needed. Cell phones were the silver bullet, providing instant info from the home front, perhaps supplemented by pics. When done, I refused to accept any apology from the woman ("I’m sorry, I’m just a woman who knows nothing about this stuff.") Mr. fix-it should have given her better info in the first place.
Most of the stores, and certainly grocery stores here, have multiple self-serve stations and way fewer live cashier lanes. Both staff and customers (self-included) have learned lots about using them. One soon learns to check an item for a UPC when you pick it up. The thing I still have trouble with is produce, which is surprisingly complex and detailed. It’s not just a Tomato – is it Roma, cherry, vine-ripened, organic, or?… My first job sixty years ago was bagging groceries (for $.65 p.hr.), and how to do that well has come back.
Thought I was alone in that; thanks. I feel free(er) to just pull off a “chunk” of stuck-togethers. One of these days I’ll ask for staff advice – may be a trick to it?
Old ladies? No, most women. Men are much more often just grabbing an armful (not even using a cart), and five can get out before one woman. Women shop, men hunt.
Actually, a placebo may be of some help – the placebo effect – particularly when given by a trusted person. No effect on the actual disorder or whatever, but the patient feels better.
Just for today, I wish nobody anything but a nice day, in the company of at least one caring person, and as a nice meal as they can make. So sad we don’t do that much more often.
@SrTechWriter… Used to use CI skillets, but too heavy these days. First thing in almost all my cooking these days is olive oil, which works well. But if I know I’ll have a bunch of bits sticking, I use SS. No dishwasher, so I finish by adding about a cup of water to the empty warm pan, which nicely softens the bits in only minutes.
This thread is compelling… My summation on the non-sticks is that there are about three generations of the things. First were the teflon terrors that failed very quickly. Then came ceramic-enhanced, better but “meh”. More recently, granite/diamond infusion, better yet. Meantime, better builds, with thicker, SS layer bases, gaining ability to work in a 500F oven (unless there’s plastic included). It’s incremental.
