I’d be interesting in knowing how that shift happened as well. The earliest occurrence of using ‘alicorn’ for a winged unicorn I know of for sure was in Piers Anthony’s 1984 novel “Bearing an Hourglass.”
Also, re: Zodiac, I believe that’s a halo. With the wings, Marigold is still making a snow angel…but a unicorn snow angel. Which is, of course, a much better and sparklier variety.
