The passage you reference John 8:7 was a trap set by the Pharisees to see whether Jesus would allow them to stone a woman for a crime without two witnesses. Deuteronomy 19:15 which points out that without two witnesses the accused will be set free. Jesus then wrote their names in the dirt. This served as a witness against them by listing all accusers and would be murders against each other. Which is referenced in Numbers 35:30 which says anyone murdering another will be put to death by the mouths of witnesses. Then after their names were wrote Jesus gave them the option to cast the stone or not. They knowing the fulfilment of the law would be their own death they left without a stone thrown.
