The association of the term “Weeaboo” for a non-Asian fan of Japanese culture comes from the pervasive use of “Wapanese” on the 4chan image board, leading moderators to insert an automatic word filter in 2005 that substituted the word “Weeaboo” for “Wapanese” whenever the latter was typed on the board. The moderators found the term from this comic. Users adapted, and simply began referring to the same population as “Weeaboos.”
