Based on the age Nancy is supposed to currently be, they probably shouldn’t have used stars from Nancy’s grandparents’ day. They should have used stars who GenXers or the last of the boomers would have been excited to meet.
Isn’t Brad like 22 or 23? I can suspend disbelief about him wanting to be married, but now a kid? I like this strip, but I think we’ve reached a point where we need to start aging these characters in real time or if that can’t be done how about have them acting like people their age.
I don’t get this at all. Do random people just get together for lunch. Toni is not in this circle why would she be hanging out with college students? There are a couple of friendships there, but it’s mostly just acquaintances.
Bets did nothing wrong so there was no reason for her to change. Gunther is a safe and boring mama’s boy, but for some reason she likes him. That’s what they should explore, what she sees in him in the first place.
To me, Bets remains the most interesting character in the strip because she seems more true to life. While I’m not expecting true realism on the comics page, it’s nice that Bets is complicated like a 19 year old should be. Steff is just a Tiffany replacement because someone decided to make Tiffany fat and give her layers – which is quite insulting. In no world would a Steff care who Gunther was dating or post about it. She’d be posting selfies and thirst traps.
I thought they did college wrong. Luann should have been accepted to a college out of state and you followed Luann’s new adventures in a new setting surrounded by new people. But instead, Delta gets shipped off and we’re left with the same characters in the exact same high school situations, now they’re just calling it college. They’re still doing messy room stories for Luann for goodness sake. All of the characters are now stuck in their patterns. Your 20s are supposed to be messy. Where’s the mess?
I totally don’t agree here. Bets only reacted to the Tiffany situation because Gunther and Les wouldn’t “man up” and tell her to get out. Then she was treated badly by Erma and Al, while Tiffany was treated like a queen by them. It upset her, and rightly so, and she acted like a typical person her age would act in a situation like that. I understand that we have had a longer relationship with Tiffany, but Tiffany and Gunther is no better than Tiffany and Bets. For whatever reason, this strip won’t allow Gunther grow. Personally, I think the character is gay which is why he can’t make any relationships work. But I don’t think they want to explore that or anything of substance with Gunther. They just keep him locked down. He’s an awful character.
Never quite understood the Bets hate. She is, perhaps, one of the most real characters in the strip right now. It seems like every college kid I meet these days would like to be an influencer or is “building their brand”. The problem with Bets and Gunther is that Gunther is a mama’s boy and the character shows no growth other than a few cosmetic changes.
While I don’t think that Erma is too thrilled about teenage cohabitation, I don’t think she has a problem with Bets. I’ve always believed the issue was Al and that Erma was supporting her husband. I don’t know what Al’s issues with Bet are, but – at least to me – I think he’s just as shady as his sister and his nephew (even though Les has softened somewhat).
