Another misuse of the term quote, it’s seldom used correctly now. Thoreau wrote something, he didn’t quote it. When someone repeats what Thoreau wrote, they are quoting Thoreau. But it’s not a “quote from Thoreau,” it’s a statement from Thoreau.

“Don’t cry over spilt milk” has a similar meaning, or “you can’t change the past.” I like “ it is what it is” better.
