I gotta agree. There have been several recent story arcs where Luann seems to be in the process of slowly transitioning from a high school senior/ college freshman to a young adult. It is a major change and likely should take some time to occur.
Ms. Guisewite: Thanks for your return. I missed you after your earlier ‘disappearance’ and again when you disappeared after Mother’s Day. I’ve enjoyed your take on life from a woman’s perspective for many years.
Here you have the dichotomy. To treat someone “with challenges” as disabled is to discriminate against them. To treat them as “normal” is also to discriminate against them, as the pre-ADA days demonstrate. The able-bodied just can’t catch a break!
As I recall, kids are so busy playing “follow the leader” that they don’t stop to consider what it is they’d like. They certainly could, but they usually don’t.
Here’s a question for y’all. Precisely what did Lou do to Gunth? Answer: she violated his privacy. Tiff did that too, but she was acting in character, Lou was not.
Know who else violated Gunth’s privacy? Betts. When Gunth first became aware of the “Betts & Gunth Show”, he was not all that thrilled about it but did not raise any serious objection. At that time. Presumably he was concerned that the kind of thing that did happen, could happen.
My prediction: Gunth & Betts are going to have a serious conversation about “The Show”. Several possible resolutions there and no real way to know which one we’ll get until after we actually get it.
Did Tiff do Gunther a disservice in creating and spreading a rumor? Certainly.
Did Luann do Gunther a disservice? Yes, she made the biggest mistake in this whole sorry mess by trying to find out something that was none of her business.
Did Betts do Gunther a disservice? Yes, she took what Gunther apparently thought were private moments and spread them on the internet. This seems pretty much the same thing that Luann did in terms of “quality” if not “quantity”.
Did Gunther do Gunther a disservice? Yes. As soon as he became aware that Betts was spreading their private moments to the public, and if he was uncomfortable with it, he should have had a chat with Betts then and there, instead of waiting until after the saga so completely unfurled.
Of course, then we would not have had a couple of weeks to stew about this…
Blame? Plenty to go around. After all, this is a morality play…
Now that the gang is out of Pitts HS, perhaps a more realistic social situation is in order? Our authors are severely constrained by the Mrs. Grundy’s of the newspaper funny papers world, but I think a more realistic version of college life is in order. My other favorite strip is currently dealing with a difficult pregnancy, so perhaps there is hope for Luann & Co.
exactly what I was thinking. Steph is clearly a foil to Tiff and otherwise not a very significant character… there are already enough airheads around
