At the risk of WomanSplaining: Some men don’t seem to understand what the term “ManSplaining” means. It is the reality that many men assume ANY woman can’t know as much as the man does about complex subjects. Men with little knowledge of science, for instance, are known to insist on ManSplaining a scientific process to a woman who actually has a degree in the field. Or to insist on explaining a portion of a technical article to a woman… not realizing she was the author of the article.
The situation here is that the “Muffin Man” insists on explaining the meaning of the Mother Goose Rhyme …to Mother Goose herself. Who, would be the “author” of the rhyme. But since he is male and she is female, he is, like so many men out in the real world, insisting on ManSplaining it to her. But in his case, using the pun, he is MUFFIN MAN-splaining.
I happen to think it is a very good … and realistic… pun!
He didn’t say she couldn’t use it. He said she couldn’t use it “anywhere in the house”…. including the basement since she couldn’t get down the stairs with a broken leg. :) Granted, as usual, Burl’s logic is totally twisted.
Someone mentioned an April doll WAS a real thing back in the day! And gave a link to a photo of one from Ebay in its box with “For Better or Worse” on the lid. I went out to ebay and discovered there are a whole LOT of April dolls, in different outfits, for sale! I don’t know how I missed knowing about this back in the heyday of the strip! Here is a link to the ebay listings.
It likely stands for “Dom Perignon,” one of the most expensive champagnes on the market. It starts at $185 a bottle and goes up from there into the thousands of dollars, depending on the year it was bottled and other factors. It’s commonly referred to among wine snobs as “Dom.” That pitcher isn’t supposed to be holding tap water…the folks at the table have champagne glasses, with yellowish liquid in them. Look at the pitcher… it’s supposed to be one of those Kool-Aid pitchers with the happy face that you can buy, modeled after the “Kool-Aid Man” in the ads. Burl likely has lemon Kool-Aid in his.
Pab… When I stumbled onto your strip for the first time several years back, I considered it the most unique strip in the pantheon of strips! (It reminded me of the quirky, off-the-wall humor I was first introduced to by the Ernie Kovacs TV show back when I was a kid in the 1950s.) And I’ve never changed that opinion. I’ve loved every minute of it. There will be a big hole in my stable of personal favorite comics on Gocomics from now on. I am literally shedding a tear right now. Or two or three. And hoping the best of times for your future. You’ve brought a lot of joy… may it come back Karma-cally on you. (Oh… and thanks to the few Comment Section regulars who regularly interpreted some of the strip’s more obscure references… and translated the occasional French or German or whatever! Good on ya, guys.) Pam
All these comments about imperial measurements and such seem to me digging too deep for the joke. I assumed it is just that he is the Wizard of “OZ” … the abbreviation for ounces. So the “gifts” he can bestow aren’t big time stuff like bravery and heart and brains. He can just give people more OUNCES of drink by super-sizing whatever size they have.
I’m only sorry it took me so long to find you! I didn’t discover the strip until 2014. Yours is a truly unique creation. Congratulations on your accomplishment to keep going 13 years… and NOT ever give up.
