Now I know how to get my kids up in the morning for school. This is excellent.

This story arc had its original run in 1989. The copyright year 1989 is in the last panel, and I remember reading it in the newspaper comics as a child. 1994 is probably the copyright date for the first time the strip was put online.

Because that’s what dresses looked like in the 80s.

For someone who didn’t have kids at the time, Bill Watterson portrayed them perfectly in C&H.

Did Hammy forget that Trent let him take the blame for the spitwad? I don’t think I could be friends with someone who threw me under the bus like that.

It was (and maybe still is) a behavior chart system where there’s a column of different colored papers stuck on a board at the front of the classroom and each child has a clothespin or some other clip-type thing that starts at the “good behavior” color(usually green). If a child breaks a rule or misbehaves, their clothespin would be “clipped down” which means it would be moved to the color below it’s current spot. If the clothespin reached the bottom of the chart, that child would get a note sent home to their parents. If they reached the bottom of the chart multiple times, then there would be a meeting with the principal.

I can’t believe he got sent home for a spit wad. That should be a clip down or recess walking level incident.
