When I was a kid we thought this was hilarious for the sheer volume of “Ooooh!”s at Calvin’s outrageous behavior. In hindsight this is easily the worst-done Rosalyn story, if not the single worst-done story in the C&H canon:
1. As noted by others, Hobbes doesn’t act as any sort of practical or moral check and Calvin just pours out idiocy until the adults thwart him. Rather out of character.2. There really isn’t anything funny about a kid locking a babysitter out of the house: the punchline just makes it clear that it’s dangerous.
Overall the story lacks any sort of tension; it’s just a big volcano of unchecked nastiness. None of the subtlety or character quirks that make C&H so loveable.
