I fought that for 40 years. Mostly seen in the “would have” construction: “If I would have studied, I would have passed the test.” Correct usage in the “if” clause is “If I had studied”. Now I’m retired and spend my time yelling at the TV for this, as well as number vs. amount and less vs. fewer.
This is the arc that hooked me on the strip. Our paper had just started carrying it and I was thinking, “What the heck is this?” I didn’t really care for it. But then there was this Tommy-Elvis sequence and I was a goner!
