During the late 1970s, I lived in a commune while in college. One of the guys hated that commercials were so loud, so he strung a wire to a coffee can with switch so we could mute them without having to get off the couch! We thought we were so cool and all of our friends took lessons in how to do that. I hate the fact that new products require remotes because I am always misplacing mine.

I feel your loss. Letting go is the hardest thing … but holding on when your furbaby is in pain is for you, not them. I took my Sylvester (my avatar) in this January for his annual check up knowing that at 21+ it would probably be his last annual check up. What I wasn’t expecting was the vet giving me the option that very day because of his obvious distress, significant weight loss, and other issues that the vet noted when palpating his stomach. Yes, there could be treatments, but they would need to be administered at the clinic and, given his age, the efficacy of the treatments was unknown as they were usually administered to younger cats. I held on too long previously and didn’t want Sylvester to suffer. I held Sylvester during the procedure and he cuddled me until he let go. He was at peace and no longer in pain.

The door has lots of locks but … no doorbell? Sophie’s woman saying “um…ding dong” makes this tidy fortress appear impenetrable!

My first DNF was A Game of Thrones. Just could not read it as it was too choppy. Now I understand why - it really was a screenplay as each scene has to be short enough for filming. Lately it seems there are a lot of books that have very short chapters that jump around between times, characters, and plot lines. Unless it’s a book club read, I give up on anything that is slog.

Satellites. You might not believe how many 40+ year old satellites are still in operations. Unfortunately, one cannot upgrade the software for ground systems because it wouldn’t be understood by the satellite.

Growing up in the 70s in Wisconsin there was a major ice storm that took out the power lines to our house outside of the city limits. The curmudgeonly farmer who had refused to electrify had the only source of water for the area and I remember driving over with buckets and pumping water by hand. And had to listen to him rant about the evils of electricity.

Luckily we had a wood burning fireplace so all ten of us could all huddle in the living room for the two weeks it took to get the power restored. But we also had to periodically torch the water pipes to the second floor so they wouldn’t freeze.

There’s a kitty footprint in the middle of the sidewalk leading to the front porch of my 1916 Bungalow. Only one – some distance from the edge of the sidewalk and quite deep. I love to speculate about how it got there.
