In Holland, there is a website from the national association of telemarketeers, where you can have your phone-number blocked. I get less than one telemarketing phonecall a year, usually from a some small business that is not a member of the association. Then I state that I am not interested, and that I do not want to be called again, and they are required by law to honor that.

Kale (boerenkool, literally farmers-cabbage) is a very popular dish in Holland. It’s cooked, mixed with mashed potatoes and served with a smoked pork sausage. I eat it at least once a week in winter.

In Holland, we eat ‘oliebollen’ this time of year. It’s essentially the same as a donut, but it’s ball-shaped (without a hole), not glazed, but powdered with icing sugar, and the most popular kind has raisins mixed in the dough. They are also sliced open and filled with other fruit, or Nutella.

There is nothing wrong with pineapple on pizza. It is Italian snobbery to complain about that, because it is not ‘traditional’. If you like it, why should you not be allowed to eat it?

Of an estimated world population of 475 million, between 100-200 million people died, mostly in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. The disease is thought to have originated in the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan, where it still pops up from time to time. The disease is caused by bacteria, which were carried by fleas, which were in turn carried by rats.

Power blackouts are a rarity in the Netherlands, en brown-outs almost never occur. It is my understanding that in the US, both are a fact of life.
