When I got my first engineering job nearly 50 years ago there was a study published comparing folks who went to college and became engineers with those who entered apprenticeships right after high school. Turns out the apprentices ended up with slightly lower wages, but were paid from the start and learned their trade for free while the engineers paid for their training, didn’t earn a dime all through college and took ten years or more to have higher salaries than the trades folks. That was when college was relatively affordable. Now I’m not sure college makes economic sense at all!
