Why would Jon do this? To what purpose? To suffer?

On this day in history, Queen released their often misunderstood and maligned pop foray, Hot Space. Though not many songs from it are featured in a host of Queen compilations over the years, it does feature their infamous collaboration with David Bowie, “Under Pressure,” a song extolling the virtues of looking out for our fellow humans in this difficult, dystopian existence. I feel that Garfield wouldn’t be a fan of the song, as it would mean being kind to Odie as well as Jon, but maybe – just maybe – it might warm his tiny kitty heart a little. If not, I’m sure he’d still like tracks such as “Dancer” because, let’s not kid ourselves – that cat can boogie! Seeing Garfield dance in the opening of Here Comes Garfield lets me know that goodness can still exist in this world.

On this day in history, Queen released their comeback album, The Works, strengthening the canon of their catalog with hits such as “Hammer to Fall”, “I Want to Break Free,” and the immortal “Radio Ga Ga.” I don’t know much about the quality of Jim Davis’ character, but I think even he could get behind the sentiment in a track like “Keep Passing the Open Windows,” a song originally written for the film The Hotel New Hampshire, about persevering while the temptation of giving up looms from every open window from a high floor. I’m thankful for Jim passing those windows, and continuously giving us years of Garfield to cherish and enjoy.

On this day in history, Queen releases their album A Kind of Magic, their last album that they would tour for, giving us classic tracks like “One Vision,” “Princes of the Universe,” and of course the titular “A Kind of Magic.” I don’t know if Jim Davis was a fan of Queen, but surely this album would be enough to sway him, if not the film Highlander which features many songs found here. To think of Garfield standing on a cliff in the Scottish countryside, a sword aloft, declaiming “THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!” It puts a smile on my face.

On this day in history, Queen released their penultimate album before Freddie Mercury’s death, The Miracle. Truly, a slept on classic. To think of Jim Davis, sitting in his recliner, his compact disc of The Miracle spinning at 500rpm as “Khashoggi’s Ship” blasts from his home entertainment center, it’s a fantasy that brings me joy. It’s a joy that this nightmare world can never take from me.

I would take that scale back to the store, they’re not supposed to act like that.
That last panel was used as the cover of Garfield’s 8th book, Garfield Tips the Scales.
