Hmmm, when Joe Staton was providing art for his and Nicolai Cuti’s OC, E-Man, back in the ’80s for First Comics, one of their one-time bad guys was a mad comic book collector whose main James Bond baddie master plan was something akin to this… plus destroying the world outside of his comic dungeon/bomb shelter mansion.
Pretty sure that is a copyright-free* version of the Yellow Kid — so named for the yelloy nightshirt that was the major component of his apparel — by Richard Outcault. First appearing in 1895, he was one of the earliest official comic strip characters, being the gradual star of “Hogan’s Alley” (think Opus from “Blood County”), which in turn was the birthplace of the modern word balloon.
*Or maybe Mike and co. altered him so he couldn’t be mistaken as some nasty racial stereotype from the past.
I know the original Quiver storyline had Tracy reminded of Shaky by her, but up until this new Shaky story, was it ever mentioned that Shaky mark 1 was related to the Trembleys? Thanks!
I remember “Shanda”, we have the titular character herself — recognizable by her tell-tale hairstyle — as well as parental abuse survivor Sissy, also recognizable for the same reasons. I’ll be interested to see how Joe humanizes the series’’ rabbit and bat characters.
Incidentally, Lurch — mentioned off-panel in yesterday’s strip — was a Native American. Perhaps a relative of Chief Yellow Pony from the strip’s classic era?
What’s that FRIENDS joke about receiving massages? Oh yeah…
“Goodbye, muscles!”
