John McPherson has struck a funny bone in me for years. I may be able to shed some light to some who don’t see the joke. He may not make you laugh. We’re all different. But I think he’s real funny. The trick with his cartoons is that you have to look at the whole package – not just the incident. There are actually several things that I find funny here. The house is on its side for what appears to be no apparent reason. And just the shell of the house went over, not the whole thing. The moon in the back is a glowing crescent and would not have been seen had the house not been on its side. I can just hear the crickets chirping. The look on the wife’s face is an “I told you so.” Now look at the astonished look on the husband’s face. Next to him is the “click” sound to show that he still didn’t know what had actually happened until he turned on the lamp. The wife is not shocked. She has overlooked the whole situation and is irritated that she had to tell him several times before he would believe her. (She heard a “Noise”). Just a noise. Look at the little pieces of trash next to the house. Look how just the upstairs has been highlighted with light. The downstairs is dark and purple except for the TV sitting in the corner. If you will take time to really explore the work of this guy, you will find him to be a genius that has only gotten better over the years.
