Should I be looking for a pun here? Yeah, I get it, many consider “My Fair Lady” an inferior movie and Harrison’s performance not Oscar quality. But he’s in the Punitentiary, which means a pun. I don’t see it.

The crime that was committed was making a reference to something that only someone old enough to remember the stink about the 1964 Best Actor Oscar awarded to Rex Harrison for the role of Professor Higgins in “My Fair Lady” would understand. There is no pun intended in today’s strip. It just so happened that the special PUN-itentiary cell was the only unoccupied cell available. That this special cell was available is itself rather unusual as Stephan Pastis is usually incarcerated in it.

Fifty-eight years from now will anyone remember Will Smith’s little Academy Awards Show faux pas?

OK, I’m still left wondering where the pun is (and, yes, I read the comments regarding who should have won, etc., and, no, that doesn’t help with a pun), why a $30 pencil sharpener, why a pencil sharpener is involved at all, and what is Weenus throwing to Eightball in panel 4?

The pun is that both Eightball and everyone competing with Rex Harrison got robbed. Eightball because Harrison’s win cheapened the value of the Oscar. But the pun isn’t really a pun because there’s no direct play on words here. Maybe you have to be over 60 to decipher the metaphysics of the joke.
