Invention is seeing the same things everyone else can see, but understanding what they don’t. That’s a good test for recognizing the really bright ideas.
I used to be able to carry around 4 or 5 ideas in my head and not forget them. But now I will come up with a great idea and think, “That’s so great I don’t have to write it down. I’ll never forget that one!” And then I spend the rest of the day trying to remember what that idea was.

Which was a shame because Dave’s thoughts weren’t just brilliant, they were incandescent.

Man, this is sure how I feel about ideas. They vanish from my mind at the speed of light…now what was it that I was going to comment…?

The incandescent bulb must be for Dave’s past memories. Modern thoughts would LED him on.

It’s so sad: Dave has really bright ideas …
… but they’re so light that they float away.

I thought I was having a thought that I thought I could relate to this… but that stupid light bulb wouldn’t materialize!
Oooh-wait! …a Bic lighter just appeared! So, yes… I think I can relate!
Wait, what were we talkin’ about?
