Teenagers have been giving their elders headaches since the invention of teenagers. One of my teachers – some 40 years ago – read our class a harangue on the rudeness and laziness of teenagers. When he asked who wrote it, and we all guessed our parents, he said, “Nope. It was Socrates.”

It wasn’t Socrates. He conversed in questions, not enraged diatribes. It seems to be from post WW-II period lamenting the loss of a time when kids who “didn’t know their place” could be sent off to be killed as cannon fodder – and the further enrichment of war profiteers. It didn’t take them too long to invent “endless war” as a way to revive that technique. If one doesn’t have conscription to do it, poverty will serve just as well.
