The place you described was an automat. I remember eating at one with my aunt when I was just a little kid. BTW, the first automat in the U.S. was Horn & Hardart in Phila. In 1902. Thanks for the memory.

I remember seeing of those in a Doris Day movie I believe Cary Grant was her costar and I think it was referred to as an automat
