I had a non-profit technology research operation incorporated in Texas, but since it was environmentally sound, the IRS delayed giving me a c3 status for months, requiring me to come 70 miles every month to be told there was no problem and finally getting it denied because I “had not contacted them for three months.” Conservation, yes; conservative, no. This was all right after Reagan gutted the Bureau of Appropriate Technology and the corporate media has not mentioned it since.
For the Teabanger groups it really isn’t about the tax exempt status. It’s about keeping the secret that they are all about rich people like the Koch Kriminal Konspiracy using poor white trash to get their political way with bullshinola laws like SYG. It’s all about donor anonymity and the fantasy that any of those groups are grass roots.
@peachyanddanny – pretty funny comment. I know ALL the Hollywooders and libbers up in NYC and the NE are all poor as churchmice, right? Oprah the poor? snorts…
RUBBER DUCKY: Appropriate Technology is the human-scaled, non-exploitative (of people or nature) ways of getting large numbers a higher standard of living without destroying the planet. It got out of the backyard inventor stage during the l970s and I had been doing some of it on my own. I even had a 6 semester-hour course on the subject which I taught once at one community college and parts of it three times at another. I tried to set up a foundation to fund this work and even the state of Texas went along with incorporation. However, the IRS, now under Reagan, stalled my application for tax-exempt status and finally denied it on patently false grounds. The field had been getting considerable media coverage until Reagan destroyed the Department of Energy’s Bureau of Appropriate Technology, after which the term essentially disappeared from the mass media. Can you follow that? Or must I post my syllabus?

Tax exempt is only for non-political organizations, like ALEC.
