Man 1: how long do we stare at the engine before we just take it to the repair shop? Man 2: I don't know. But here comes Jack from across the street to stick his head in here too. Man 1: Nuts. We're going to be here all day.
I am so old I can remember when we had gauges to tell us these things. Most of the time, it turns out to be one cylinder misfired once and won’t do it again for another year, but the light came on anyway.

The “Check Engine” light went on.
They opened up the hood and, sure enough, there it was!
