That takes me back to MAD again. It was a bit about weddings and the setup was to say, “Don’t they make a nice couple?” The response was, “A couple of what?”
Maybe she’s just trying to teach her daughter her own sense of humor. Fathers do this with sons all the time. And I will bet that many readers/commenters here can picture a scenario where the mother is the butt of some lame wisecrack from dad.
If there is one positive memory my brother and I share of our father, it is his completely cornball, what would today be called “nerdy”, sense of humor. He loved old time comedy acts like Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, and the Three Stooges. The benefit to my brother and me is that when we tell a real groaner, we can blame it on dad. It’s especially valuable if the other brother is around to vouch for the offender’s tale. Like @ family events.
It’s also an interesting thing i have seen. Most women I know say that the man’s sense of humor is one reason if not the main reason they married their husband. My wife says it. And yes, I would not marry anyone with no sense of humor.
Oh, God. This brings back memories of an adult ride with my parents.
“Watch out for that curb”“I saw the curb. It’s got to be half a foot high.”“It’s six inches high. You almost ran into it.”“Six inches is half-a-foot. I saw it and did not run into it.”
For forty-five minutes. Longest ride of my life. :)
