Neck ties are the reason behind the big push to get people back into offices. Economists don’t want the neck tie industry to have the same fate as the buggy whip industry.
I know men complain about having to wear neckties in many offices, but I’ve noticed women are often expected to wear pumps or high heels and skirts in cold offices where men are wearing suits.
When I was in the FBI I wore a tie almost every day along with a suit or sport coat. I believe it did make a difference in how people treated me. It conveyed a sense of discipline and respectability, deserved or not. It was easier to pick up girls, too (before I was married, of course).
One day we were rushing around the house, getting dressed and ready for a wedding. I was in front of a mirror, desperately trying to tie my tie and getting more frustrated by the second. Then the doorbell rang. "Grrrr..NOW WHAT??I opened the door and there stood two nicely dressed gentlemen representing the Jehovah’s Witnesses faith. Before they had gotten two words out, I interrupted with, “Sorry guys, I’m late for a wedding, maybe some other time, huh?” Then I noticed their ties! “Hey, maybe you could help me out here. D’ya think you could do me a HUGE favor and tie my tie for me?” They were happy to oblige and I went to the wedding with a nice knot!
My thought is that historically the bosses saw it as a leash or as a way to quickly choke out the subordinate who was not a team player. Older men accepted it because it conceals some of the turkey neck. Younger guys had to accept it as part of the “go along to get along”.
