North is up in flatland.

Up is determined by the lettering.

Are they west cows or east cows?

Up=altitude. North is often towards the top. But it hasn’t always been so. Which might explain the Age of Discovery by a man’s inability to ask for directions. I’ve stumbled upon the most interesting things while totally lost.

When I was a kid. We’d go to Florida on vacation. My mom would turn the map upside down when we were going south so she could give left-right directions to my dad. This was before interstates…

Are we there yet?

I like that the kid is interacting with the father, instead of having his face in a phone or tablet.

And down is South, a very hot south…

As long as the north pole is at the top of the earth, north has gotta be up and south has gotta be down. East and west can be right or left depending on your orientation. All this only applies if you are physically located on the earth.

Looks like dad isn’t down with up. Most people find the opening of Up a downer.
