They need a car class for non-mechanics just to teach the May people the basic parts of a car and what they do so they can have an idea what their mechanic is talking about.
If my truck pops and clunks when I turn, then the steering bushings are worn out. A mechanic needs to jack it up by the frame, not the axle to check them, as jacking the axle would put tension on the bushings, making them appear to be ok.
We took Her Elantra in for a transmission problem. About 15 minutes later, the grease monkey and the service manager both came out with extremely serious expressions; informed us that if we didn’t get a 4-wheel brake job right now we would, basically, die on our way home.
We’d gotten a 4-wheel brake job elsewhere 2 weeks earlier…..
Every dern wrench around here is incompetent, over-priced, dishonest, or a combination hereof.
Had a pin hole leak in the radiator of a PT Cruiser, the mech & supervisor at the franchise tires+ shop tried to convince me it would be empty by the time I got home. Chatted with a mech at the school bus garage where I drove, he suggested just pouring a couple of tablespoons of ground pepper into the radiator. Well, I didn’t do that, but a locally owned shop did replace it a couple of years later when it needed a water pump replaced. oi!
