I HATE to think all of the TV I missed because of that!

Boys, if you stay up late you can watch Shock Theater and see all the great old Dracula and Frankenstein movies! Great stuff!

1950’s?

Never heard of that show.

I wonder how old I was before i figured that one out! lol

@Grog - Sky King flew the Songbird out of his Flying Crown Ranch and his niece Penny lived with him. The show ran during the early to mid 50’s. It was an afternoon show in my area. All the junk “Mom” shows such as Guiding Light, Edge of Night, etc. would end and then it was kids shows up until then News started with “Uncle Walter” or Chet and Dave depending upon which network you picked.

Anyone remember the old Andy Devine show?

Thanks, Ken. That one was just a decade ahead of my time. Though I don’t recall much about the pre-teen years, Star Trek was the show we came home to after the soaps in the 70’s.

Sky King ran on Saturday afternoons into the early 60s in the NY area.

Lots of good shows back then, most were live and full of creative stuff that today’s stations will never allow. Just look up Ernie Kovaks or Soupy Sales on Youtube.

Andy Devine as Jingles was Guy Madison’s sidekick on the old “Wild Bill Hickock Show” sponsored by Kellogg’s Sugar Corn Pops, the intro for each episode featured Madison as Wild Bill and Jingles shooting their six shooters at the camera while on their trusty steeds at a full gallop

“Hey, Wild Bill, wait for me!” shouted Jingles, every time

strangely , I have no memory of “The Andy Devine Show” must have been a short lived one

later on this fine 1958 saturday morning, Red can watch the “Tales of Texas Rangers” featuring Texas rangers Jace Morgan and Clay Pierson (I think) , who alternated between present day 1958 and cowboy days each week, fighting crime from horses and squad cars

We had Rin-Tin-Tin right after Sky King and before the Roy Rogers/Dale Evans show featuring Gabby Hayes. Flippo the Clown had cartoons for an hour, then was host of The Early Show. On Sundays, after church, Flippo also hosted a movie which alternated between a Shirley Temple movie, Andy Hardy, Tarzan or an early SciFi flick such as Buck Rogers.

Flippo, King of the Clowns, was THE number one show on Columbus, Ohio television for thirty years (1953-1983). He ran neck-and-neck with legendary Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes as the most beloved personality in Ohio, and Woody would occasionally show up with Flippo on his cartoon show. They were great friends. Flippo’s Early Show was the first show broadcast in color in Columbus when color TV came online (yeah, I’m old enough to remember B&W television with only three channels).

After Sky King, Fury and Roy Rogers, I got to watch My Friend Flicka and The Lone Ranger!!

I remember Sky King from the radio. My Dad was waiting for TV to be “perfected” before we got one.

I think this cartoon takes place after 1958, because in the past Red has sent letters to Marcia Brady.

Well, he’s watching RERUNS of Sky King!

I remember watching Sky King when I was Red’s age.

The one Sky King episode I remember had him delivering a portable iron lung to a remote ranch where the little girl had contracted polio. Iron lungs featured a lot in programs back then. Not so much today, thank God and Jonas Salk!

Unfortunately Drs. Salk and Sabin’s cure came a couple years too late for me. Oh well…

I know Sky King mostly from the very first version of Trivial Pursuit. The guys who made up the questions must have liked that show because there were a number asked about it.
