When my grandkids ask me questions like that, it’s usually after I’ve used the expression several times. They don’t usually ask though because their dads grew up on my odd expressions and they’ve grown up hearing them. Oddly, my sons never asked what they meant!
Nellie Bell was the name of Pat Brady’s jeep on the old Roy Roger’s show. I always kind of thought that expression came from that. Nothing to base that on just something I thought as a kid.
