Actually a long hard stare is a threat to a dog. So if you try it with your pet keep your face soft and relaxed or you will win when your pup get nervous.
My dog is a Lab/Pitt mix. His attention span in any staring contest is shorter than mine—assuming I took my ADHD medication that day. If not——-it is more a race to see who gets distracted first.

Does Rover’s stare come from his unwavering love and loyalty to young Red?

Usually it’s a sad, pleading stare. Very hard to ignore.
