My nickname for my cat is “Neighborhood Watch”. When I go for walks in the cul-de-sac, she makes sure to keep track of every coming and going, every strange car parked, every garbage bin out for pickup and will climb over furniture left out. Cats have a very strong sense of rightness about place and behavior because their very lives can depend upon it.

Several nights ago one of the doggos had to go out at 10:00PM. I went along. Now every night and not just one but all of them. But, they need to do their rounds. Who am I to say no.

It’s good to know they have a neighborhood watch program.

This strip made me reminisce about the days when I was young and none of today’s dangers or concerns were a bother to us. Our pet dogs had free run of the neighborhood and nobody minded, and they always returned home safely. Kids could stay out until dark and play in the street or the neighbor’s backyard or the park down the street and no one called the police, or worried that they might kill themselves on the playground slide. Everyone knew the names of all the kids and the dogs, and which home they came from, especially the one elderly lady who always had a bowl of water and a plate of cookies on her back porch and a welcoming smile.

We can always count on Rover.
