Why oh why do so many dogs insist on shaking off water once they get inside the house instead of using the time a patient owner will allow on the porch? Walking in rain is OK with me, but the foyer shower I can do without.
If you’re quick enough, you can keep a dog from shaking. A dog’s full-body shake starts with the head. Head can’t move = no shake. Getting and keeping a firm-but-not-painful grip on the muzzle, lead Dog to your chosen shake location. Let go and run. It takes Dog a second or two to rev up to the full catastrophe, so you may escape most of the shower. Of course, this method is possible only if your dog has a muzzle long enough to grip.
As a human with three Labradors living with his family I can tell you that Labs love the water and their humans so much that they will walk 100 meters soaking wet to shake off in front of you in order the share the experience. It’s ok in the summer, but when we are in the winter that is another experience altogether.

Enjoy it now, Red… in a little over three weeks, instead of being out in the yard on a sunny morning you’ll be sitting in a classroom.

We had a poodle that my father taught to “wipe his feet”! Had a rug below the steps from the back door and sure as heck, he’d “wipe his feet”!
