The real reason? It’s the only reason – to smell everything around him.

One of our mutts has multiple windows to look out of, but a couple times a day I have to open the door so she can get a few sniffs. This is in addition to walks and actually going out into the yard.

I had a basset hound and our house had a dog door. The basset would stick her nose out the dog door just to sniff the air. If nothing smelled interesting she would go lie back down in her bed. The neighbors found it highly amusing to see just a nose sticking out of the door. We put a picture of it in our Christmas card.

Riding in a car is like running in a pack hunt and sniffing your surroundings. The car stops at a window and they hand you hot food. It doesn’t get any better.

This morning, (At o’dark thirty), I took the doggos all for walkies and each one had to stop and sniff everywhere. It was like the first day up here for them. You would think they were marking their territory all over after a drenching rain had cleansed the city of all its grime and washed it all down to the Bay.
