Forget football helmet, it looks more like a fright wig!

My first exposure to Nancy was through a newspaper comics Saturday-morning omnibus show featuring The Archies. That show was so cheap that Nancy did not have spikes on her hair. If you can’t make them look like what they look like, why bother? Filmation was known for being extremely cheap. They would limit themselves to three cell layers per scene, so that meant many dramatic closeups of people’s faces. Why did we ever stand for these things?

Advice, stay away from unsolicited hair comments for women.

Several years ago the Tampa Bay Times replaced Non Sequitur with Nancy for reasons of political correctness. I never read Nancy, but it’s nice to see the strip’s terrible graphics skewered.

It cannot be denied that Ernie Bushmiller’s Nancy was primitive in most aspects including the quality of the artwork and the sight gags but for the most part it was funny, and that’s what comics are supposed to be. I enjoyed it when I was growing up and still do.

When I was little my Dad used to read me comics and Nancy was my favorite. He taught me to read, and one day, when I was 3 years old he said: “You know how to read now so now you read it to me.” And I did.

Back when Jerry Scott drew Nancy, I thought she and Sluggo were supposed to be light-skinned Black kids.

And what’s with all the tiny spikes sticking out of her “football helmet” hair?
