There have been comments recently about when the timeline for this wonderful nostalgic strip is. Most of us agree it is in the late ’60s and some agree that it is also in the early ’70s. I suggested yesterday that the timeline may be 1967-75 with Red six in 1967 and fourteen in 1975.I see that that comment got eight “likes” but someone suggested I was over-analysing it and someone else said that I must have OCD.
I certainly have a very analytical mind and have worked as a filing clerk and a data analyst. I have been accused of being over-analytical in my comments on two of my other favourite strips – Calvin and Hobbes and The Wizard of Id. Someone recently said in my favour on The Wizard of Id that an analytical mind is a good thing to have.
I live in the UK and was born in the last month of 1966 so I remember the 1970s rather than the 1960s so those strips with a 1970s nostalgic feel mean more to me than those reflecting the 1960s.
I suggested earlier that as Brian Basset was born in November 1957 and would have been Red’s approximate age of ten for most of 1968 then 1968 would be the main year for the strip. However, my suggestion yesterday puts 1968 as an early year for this strip. I certainly enjoy the strip. As I have said before, Calvin and Hobbes is my favourite strip and Andy Capp is my second favourite. Red and Rover and The Wizard of Id are strong contenders for third place.
One thing very good about Red’s parents—they don’t crowd their son with so many extracurricular activities (sports practice, music lessons, Sunday school, etc.) that the poor kid is burned out before age ten!!
There’s nothing more pathetic than parents trying to live vicariously through their children!!
My birthday is today, my dog’s birthday is tomorrow. Today we are having donuts at home – those are really for the dog who loves them once a year – and pizza tonight with the child and her children. We are lazing around, and acting much like Red and Rover today, including the close bond and my red hair. This is exactly what I wanted to do today. Comics are a must, too!
For the naysayers out there that have disdain for Red not ever interaction with Human friends. Look at how humans act today and then look at Red and Rover today.
Give me a boy like Red and a Dog like Rover any day over most humans.

In The Little Prince, we learned that who you waste time on (with) is who you love.

Kids have to become their own person and not be pushed to doing things they don’t want to do or don’t like.
