Actually, The Abyss was really just a blackened mirror glued to the front of your TV screen. The real abyss is waiting in your closet, in the back, waiting for midnight, midnight on Friday the 13th. Waiting. It’s very patient. At waiting. And watching you. From the dark. In your closet. Late at night…

Besides, The Spittles was too obviously derivative of Married With Children, which worked that vein until it was exhausted…. And Flapjack sounds suspiciously like The Mod Squad.

Groan! It’s happening again! A cartoonist is giving them ideas. The pitch: “It’s Three’s Company meets Friends, but different!”

And the Top Critic Award goes to . . . the studio audience for The Spittles.

“the funky black man…and the outrageous gay man, exist only to dispense funky & outrageous wisecracks that help Dewey get a life!”

Thank you, thank you for this. You just summarized most network shows where the main characters are white and straight, and the supporting characters who are not seem to be thrown in just to make snarky comments and “make it real.” (While visiting relatives I was forced to watch “Modern Family.” Yikes.)

It’s things like this that make me avoid network TV.

I still think Flapjack was the funniest thing I ever wrote, if I may be immodest for a moment.

    No immodesty needed
