richard's poor almanac halloween at the white house by richard thompson mary: jeez, abe- lighten up! mary todd lincoln threw the first white house hall-oween party, an embarrassing debacle where almost all of the guests came as abraham lincoln, includ-ing mary todd. abe got into a snit & stalked out. fdr: "oh no, it's a man from mars! eeeeeeek!" in his october 31, 1939 fireside chat, fdr told a scary story about martians landing in new jersey. the nation, having heard orson welles' version a year ear-lier, didn't panic. for halloween of 1969, president nixon indulged his puckish sense of humor by donning a rubber nixon mask. according to legend, the mask became stuck on his head & he spent the rest of his life trying to remove it. oop: are you okay, mr. president? nixon: uh-oh. oop: don't yank you face, sire, it'll get in-fected. cheney: cut! cut! cut! bush: watch it! we're just pretend-in. at last years white house halloween party, pres-ident bush & vice president cheney came as "cut 'n run, the devilish democrats." this year they're going as the front & back ends of donald rumsfeld.
