    The more rare or spectacular an astronomical event, the more likely the weather will be bad.

    Also when we astronomers get new optical equipment, you can pretty much guarantee the clouds will roll in. Last year when I had my cataract surgery – which certainly counts as new optical equipment! – our star parties were clouded out all spring!

    But if you want to see a great aurora, just wait till I go home (one of my nicknames is Aurora Jinx.) And if you want to see a great meteor, just talk to my friend Bill and look over his shoulder – there will be one.
