Nearly 2 billion vehicles have crossed the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Calif., USA, since its completion in 1937! Soviet researcher Dimitri Belyaev began breeding foxes in the 1950s as a genetic experiment, and discovered they could be domesticated in less than a dozen generations! More than 50 years later, the experiment is still going on. On Feb. 5, 2011- a 237-year-old bottle of French wine sold at auction for $77,000!

2 billion vehicles? I very much doubt that. 2 billion crossings, certainly but many fewer vehicles some of which cross twice daily!

So, your contention is that it’s only a vehicle the first time it crosses? They didn’t qualify it by saying “different” vehicles.

I agree with Gordon; the sentence could have been phrased differently. Is it trying to say that the bridge has been crossed 2 billion times, or that 2 billion unique vehicles have crossed it (which would imply far more than 2 billion crossings).

I think the Golden Gate panel is phrased perfectly well. It almost seems as though some people are TRYING to find something to complain about. How tedious.

That’s approximately 52 vehicles per minute — allowing 365 days of closures from 1937 to 2011 — with 4 lanes that’s 13 vehicles per lane per minute.

I saw a NOVA episode about how dogs got domesticated and that talked a bit about the Russian fox breeding program.
