In 1794, US sea Captain John Kendrick was killed in Hawaii while dining on board his ship when a British vessel accidentally used a live shot to fire a cannon salute in his honor. The Gilbert Atomic Energy Lab, a 1950s science kit for children, included genuine radioactive uranium, polonium and a Geiger counter! It takes the sun 220 million years to orbit the center of the galaxy, despite moving at almost 500,000 MPH.

In other words, Kendrick was killed via friendly fire?

Ok, the sun travels at over 8000 miles a second. Man, that’s faster than a speeding bullet.

I had an AC Gilbert Chemistry Set with a “spinthariscope” for viewing radioactive decay back in 1957.

The only reason this is surprising is that people have decided that radioactive stuff is dangerous. To be sure, large doses of radiation aren’t good for you; but a chunk of uranium ore is quite harmless. Even refined natural uranium and polonium would be no problem (and they’re usually bound up in a plastic sample case anyway).

The Brit loading the cannon with a blank was probably still a little pissed off with him from the war.

An “accident,” ehh? If Kendrick was anything like Bligh or Queeg, I’d be at least a little skeptical.

“Kendrick? John Kendrick? I say captain, but isn’t that the bloke you caught in bed with your…?”“NO!”

so we waited 18 years to get even?

How do we know the speed of the sun orbiting the galaxy? And how quickly does the galaxy orbit the universe?

And tongue cancer and nose cancer and throat cancer, etc., etc.

then there were those x-ray machines you stuck your feet into so you could see them inside your shoes.

How about just the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the galaxy?

Junior will really have to clean up his room after using that kit.
